Cost effective in comparison to many caravans and motorhomes
1. Excellent Stability and Towing Performance on the Road
Quite simply the 5th wheeler is more stable and safer on the road than other conventional towing combinations (e.g. motorhome & car trailer, car and caravan). They use the same principles as semi-trailers. This is due to the amount and location of the mass transferred from the trailer to the tow vehicle. Most 5th wheelers transfer 400 + kgs over the rear axle of the tow vehicle. Conventional trailers/caravans normally only transfer approx 180kgs onto the tow vehicle tow-bar (approx. 150cm behind the rear axle). The main effects of this are:
- The axles on caravans have to be closer to the centre of the caravan whereas 5th wheeler axles can be located further to the rear.
- Any adverse movement of the 5th wheeler (such as a road-train passing) is quickly dissipated since it is being towed from directly over the axle. Hence there is no pitching and yawing found in conventional caravans/trailers when the movement of the caravan can create a dangerous series of movements in the tow vehicle.
- The substantial transfer of weight to the tow vehicle actually improves its stability and braking performance - whereas attaching a caravan to a tow bar effectively reduces the weight on the front axle of the tow vehicle reducing its stability. Hence the use of cumbersome weight transfer systems.

2. Great aerodynamics and maneuverability
The streamlined aerodynamic design of the 5th wheelers reduces wind resistance with enormous savings in fuel consumption.

This effect is further enhanced in the Cut Loose range by:
- A unique aerodynamic nosecone
- Hitches and pinboxes designed to keep the 5th wheeler close to the tow vehicle
- A relatively low & flat roof line to reduce 'wind drag'
The units are also easier to reverse and do not cut the corners off when compared to a conventional caravan combination. At Cut Loose Towing Workshops our owners (especially the ladies) are regularly surprised how easy they are to manoeuvre.
3. Effortless hitching and unhitching
One of the benefits of a 5th wheeler often overlooked is the ease with which it can be attached and detached to the tow vehicle. This process can easily be completed within 2 minutes by one operator and requires little effort.

Reversing onto the 5th Wheeler - view from the driver's seat

Snaplocks release the telescopic landing legs
From the comfort of the driver's seat you can clearly see the kingpin as it lines up with the hitch guide and it automatically locks into the hitch before you leave the driver's seat.
All you do then is secure the safety pin, attach the safety break-away cable and plug in the 7pin electric supply.
Simply pressing a switch lifts the landing legs until they are clear off the ground and operating the spring loaded snap-locks allows you to raise the telescopic legs clear of the ground.
4. Only requires a small utility truck - ideal for sight seeing
The Cut Loose range are designed to be comfortably towed with the popular utility trucks found in Australia. Go to our Towing Info page for further information on Tow Vehicles. Now you can have a luxury 4WD for your sight seeing and a Cut Loose - all in one neat package.
5. Cost effective in comparison to many caravans & motor homes
Cut Loose combinations (5th wheeler and tow vehicle) are now very cost competitive when compared with the motorhome and car and caravan options.
- Quality tow vehicles from $40,000
- Great fuel efficiency - when towing and not towing
- Only 2 registrations required
- Competitive insurance (see FAQs for details)
- Freedom to upgrade tow vehicle independent to 5th wheeler
- No inconvenience to your home while your Tow Vehicle is being serviced or repaired
- Your combination will hold its value better than other RV types.
No wonder so many people are now considering their new lifestyle in a Cut Loose 5th wheeler.
